In Sanskrit Mercury is known as "Budha", which is the root of the word 'Budhavara' meaning Wednesday. Budha is also connected to the name "buddhi" which is our faculty for discernment.
Mercury, therefore, governs the intellect, agility of mind and our ability to understand things, controlling learning in general and our capacity to make sense of the world.
Mercury is a fast-moving planet which, concerning intellect, represents quick comprehension and the ability to multi-task, enabling a fast interchange of ideas and information. Mercury has a thirst for knowledge and study specifically in areas such as writing, poetry, architecture, accounting and trade. Craftmanship is a vital trait for Mercury, giving people dexterity and the skills become great artisans.
Mercury is a youthful planet, representing childhood, especially the stage between infancy to adolescence. Those with a strong mercury are often young in spirit, even as they age, they remain young at heart and often look younger than they are.
With a witty with a sharp sense of humour, Mercury has a mutable and flexible personality so can adapt to many situations and people with ease. Physically Mercury rules the skin, the nervous system, the thyroid and the tongue. A well-placed Mercury will bestow health in these areas. A weak Mercury can cause sensitivity to the nervous system resulting in skin disorders, tremors, or impede one's speech.
