Abhyanga is a traditional full-body Ayurvedic oil massage, using warm herbal oils which are applied to the whole body, starting with the head and covering the whole body down to the feet. This deeply nourishing treatment is designed to restore balance, support relaxation, ground the nervous system..
In Ayurveda, oil is considered medicine and touch is understood as a powerful pathway to wellbeing - a practice with roots stretching back through centuries of tradition.
THE BENEFITS
Abhyanga works on many levels - physical, energetic and emotional.
The massage helps to open the body's channels and gently activates the lymph, supporting the movement and elimination of impurities.
The flowing movements help to keep circulation going, while the warm oil nourishes the skin, leaving it feeling supple, soft and flexible. The massage also helps to move excess water retention, encouraging a greater sense of lightness throughout the body.
Through rhythmic massage, internal organs and pressure points are stimulated to promote overall emotional and physical well-being. It tones the limbs, helps to reduce stagnation and supports healthy circulation and fluid movement throughout the body.
On an emotional level, the combination of warmth, oil and continuous touch can be deeply grounding and calming, helping to settle the mind, release accumulated tension and bring you back into connection with yourself, slow down, breathe and be fully present in your body.
AFTERCARE
If possible, give yourself some quiet time after your session and allow your body time to rest and integrate the treatment.
Take a warm shower or bath — this helps to wash away any impurities on the skin that may have shifted from the body throughout the session.
Move slowly and avoid rushing — give yourself time to transition gently back into your day.
Drink warm water — this can help to flush out any impurities that may have surfaced during the session.
Take time for yourself — allow yourself some quiet space to relax, reflect and simply be.
Favour warm or room-temperature food and drink.
Rest — give your body the time and space it needs to absorb the benefits of the treatment.
Avoid heavy activity or exercise for 24 hours. Gentle, restorative movement is fine.
